Specialized electric motors for severe duty

We make electric motors for the world’s largest machines and harshest operating conditions. This includes everything from dragline motors with zero-to-200% load cycles of 150 metric tons—sometimes operating at -30℃—to 10,000 HP main stand motors for steel mills.

In our quest to improve industrial electric motors, we’ve implemented vertically integrated manufacturing and developed numerous innovations in motor designs, materials, and processes:

Standard, Class H (180°C) insulation
Higher-performing Class R (220°C) insulation available for severe applications where insulating materials, including VPI resin qualifies for Class S (240°C)
An improved Vacuum Pressure Impregnation (VPI) armature insulation system with greater dielectric strength, thermal conductivity, and resistance to moisture and chemicals
In-house commutator design and manufacturing utilizing improved alloys
Proprietary processes for wet winding field coils, to enhance performance

MAC Motors

New AC motors for machine upgrades and DC conversions

Our FLANDERS-original, built-for-purpose AC motors will take your machine’s performance to a new level.

Depending on your machine and application, upgrading from DC to AC can improve machine performance by as much as 30%. Our MAC motors—which drop into your machine’s current AC frame footprint—take those performance gains even further by using:

Tighter tolerance
Inverter-duty rated insulation systems
Higher speeds, starting torque, and torque ratings
Modular design for ease of repair
VFD/VSD bearing protection
And other technology enhancements

M Motors

Drop-in AC and DC motor upgrades with greater horsepower and reliability

With our M Motor offering, we upgrade your current AC or DC motor using FLANDERS-engineered components and tighter process standards to increase the horsepower, reliability, and lifespan of your machines. M Motor upgrade options include, but are not limited to:

Insulation system enhancements
Cooling system modifications for airflow improvement
Upgraded mechanical components (shaft, bearings, spider, end rings, etc.)
Optimized applied voltages and current densities for improved magnetic profile

FLANDERS M Motor upgrades require no modifications to the existing motor frame.

FLANDERS M Motors for mining shovels deliver up to 60% gains in peak power, compared to conventional systems (2000 vs. 1250).

ME Motors

Severe-duty DC motors for heavy industrial applications

The groundbreaking innovations in our ME 800- and 1000-series motors set new performance benchmarks for DC motors in severe-duty applications.

By using tighter tolerances, improved armatures, better coil insulation, and proprietary manufacturing processes, we reduce circulating currents inside the machine to achieve greater efficiency, more horsepower, and higher peak power.

Built to standard AISE-equivalent frame sizes, our factory-new DC motors are a great way to get more production out of your current machines.

For force-ventilated machines, you can boost the torque of your ME Motors by ~12% by over-exciting the fields.

There’s no substitute for field expertise when it comes to motors for heavy industry

There’s too much complexity in heavy industry to have an off-the-shelf mentality; you’ve got to understand the whole context. Our field engineers bring a lot of value to our clients because of our in-depth knowledge of not just motors and drives but also machines and applications.

Stringent motor QA and testing

We have quality processes and test to the most stringent motor performance standards in the industry. Our custom manufacturing capabilities enable us to manufacture motors to tighter tolerances than most companies, playing a big role in the exceptional level of quality we deliver.

FLANDERS has our own 5.1 MW dynamometer facility for testing large-scale industrial motors, and we black band test every FLANDERS motor to optimize the magnetics. The extra measures we take to fine tune our motors before they leave the shop means commissioning goes much faster when we’re onsite at your operation.

And we’re as rigorous in testing motors that we repair or rebuild as we are in testing factory-new motors.

Motor Exchange Program

Reduce overhead by having us carry your backup motor inventory

With our motor exchange program, for a set fee we’ll keep backup motors reserved for you in our inventory, ready for rapid delivery and installation if we need to pull your current motors for in-shop work.

After we do the motor exchange, we restore the original motor to like-new condition and you cover the costs of those repairs, just as you would if we were going to reinstall the original motor in your machine.

Our Motor Exchange Program keeps your operation running with less overhead burden.

Cooling system upgrades

As part of upgrading your liquid cooled drives, we can also upgrade your cooling systems. In the case of DC to AC dragline upgrades for example, we upgrade the machine from an air-cooled to a liquid-cooled system, enabling us to seal the housing for grit-free operation and eliminating the need for filters that need to be changed.
